John Szarkowski, the celebrated curator, critic, photographer and writer passed away this week. A tireless advocate for photography, he helped champion and legitimate photography, wrote eloquently about the medium and its practitioners, and taught us how to look at and read photographs with intelligence and wisdom.

His knowledge, wisdom and eye will be missed. Read more here.

The whole idea of what a great photograph could be was transformed by Szarkowski curating at MOMA. The huge early resistance from the wider art world eventually melted away thanks to his intelligence and enthusiasm.

This week's news about Robert Capa's negatives finally resurfacing surely makes me miss Szarkowski and his "intelligence and enthusiasm." If he'd lived to see the little-known, long-unseen work, hearing his take would have been priceless.
